These thoughts—these assumptions—have woven themselves into our hearts, sometimes making it difficult to distinguish where compassion for others ends and care for ourselves begins.

Inspired by The Work of Byron Katie and her powerful reminder of “three kinds of business in the universe: mine, yours, and God’s,” I found a beautiful gateway to peace, balance, and self-respect.

My business: What’s within my control—my thoughts, actions, and choices.
Your business: What’s within others’ control—their thoughts, actions, choices, and feelings.
God’s business: Everything beyond human control, such as natural events, the mysteries of life, and the unseen paths of fate.

When we worry about others’ opinions, we’re entangling ourselves in their business.
As Byron Katie explains, “If you are mentally in your friend’s business, you are not present in your own.” The more we focus on others, the further we drift from ourselves, often disconnecting from the peace and clarity within.

For many of us, there’s a belief that to be good, we must always help others, even if it means putting their needs above our own.
But true compassion allows others to learn and grow in their own time. Real help comes from being present, not from trying to “fix” things.

Sometimes the best way to support someone is by honoring their journey, trusting their inner strength, and respecting their own inner wisdom. By simply being present, without judgment or solutions, we create a safe, open space for others to connect to their own truth.
In this way, our peace and clarity can serve as a silent beacon of inspiration for others to explore their own path without fear.

In our highest state of consciousness, we recognize that everyone has their inner wisdom and the strength to find their answers.
Supporting others doesn’t mean solving their problems; it means being a source of calm, present love that honors their journey. This way, we help others as a peaceful presence, allowing them to access their strength rather than leaning on ours.
When we help from this place, we’re respecting both their path and our own.

Practice 1: Detaching from Others’ Opinions – Mindful Reflection on “Whose Business Is This?

Daily Reflection:
Spend a few minutes each day journaling about any worries or expectations that linger around others’ opinions of you.
Ask yourself, Is this my business or theirs?
Notice if it’s really yours, and if it’s not, gently let it go.
Over time, this simple question can help you cultivate awareness and gently release the hold others’ thoughts may have on you.
